Service, skills and success

Civitas Law is an innovative and progressive barristers’ chambers that achieves its service commitments to clients through strong teams of experienced, specialist barristers and client support staff.

The set consistently progresses for the benefit of members and clients alike, making this a rewarding and motivating chambers to join, either as a tenant, pupil or member of staff. Our unique and long-standing knowledge of client needs and expectations helps us to meet the needs of our clients and communities and tailor our services accordingly. We care because it matters to them and look for those with the same values and vision to be a part of our success.

Opportunities for all

Civitas Law is an Equal Opportunities employer. We operate a strict policy of non-discrimination on grounds of race, creed, colour, gender, sexual orientation, disability or age. We offer equal opportunities for all both as an employer of our support staff and in our selection of pupils and tenants. We operate maternity / paternity and childcare policies.

If you would like to join us, please contact David Jones, Chambers Director or other members of Chambers in the strictest of confidence on 0845 0713 007. Alternatively, please email recruitment@civitaslaw.com

Pupillage

Civitas Law only grants pupillages to candidates we regard as prospective tenants. Inevitably therefore, our selection process is rigorous.

Pupillages starting in 2016

Our pupils normally come under the supervision of up to four pupil supervisors during the 12-month pupillage, with regular appraisal meetings being conducted. Pupils will be given the opportunity to undertake a full range of our work, whilst broadening their experience with the pupil supervisor and other members of Chambers.

What we are looking for

We are looking to recruit exceptional candidates who are able to demonstrate a high level competence in the following areas:

  • intellectual ability;
  • market awareness;
  • ability to work under pressure;
  • written communication skills;
  • oral advocacy skills; motivation;
  • customer focus; and
  • determination.

An intention to pursue practice from Civitas Law is also sought.

Funding

Chambers is offering a grant of £12,000 for each 12-month pupillage.

Pupils are expected to appear in the civil courts and/or tribunals during their 2nd 6 months of pupillage: the income received during pupillage for such work is not subject to any chambers' deductions.

When are you able to start?

Civitas Law is looking to award up to two pupilages starting in 2016. We would ideally like one of them to start early in the year. Chambers is open to 2nd and 3rd six applications throughout the year.

How and when to apply

Please apply by CV and covering letter addressed to Anthony Vines by email to recruitment@civitaslaw.com.  Please also submit a completed Equality and Diversity Monitoring Form.

Deadline for applications: 4pm on Friday 18th December 2015.

Interviews

We are planning to interview during January 2016.

Pupillages starting in 2017

Chambers will not be announcing its position on pupillages starting in 2017 until next year.

Mini Pupillage

Chambers offers mini-pupillages to those who are 17 years of age or above, who have a minimum of five GCSEs at grade C or above and who appear to have the skills and motivation to come to the Bar.

Priority is given to those who are university students.  We try to make each mini-pupillage for a period of a couple of days up to a working-week dependent upon work levels. The mini-pupil may attend court or conferences with members of chambers and may meet tenants and our current pupil barrister.

Prospective applicants should be aware that they have to arrange their own transport and the arrangements for the mini-pupillage can change at short notice.

Please send your letter supported by a current c.v. to:
