Practice Profile

Personal Injury

Practice is evenly split between Defendants and Claimants with a particular emphasis on employers’ liability.  Has particular experience in disease claims in particular mesothelioma.

Regularly instructed on behalf of Local Authorities , NHS Trusts and major insurers in high-value claims. Further, has significant experience of litigation on behalf of government departments during the course of 7 years on the Treasury Solicitor’s Provincial Panel.


Recent/current instructions include:

• Successful defence of a road traffic claim which had resulted in serious head injury.  Value of claim if successful was in the region of £750,000.

• “Lost-Years” claim for Claimant suffering from mesothelioma.  Settlement achieved at £180,000.

• Tripping claim in respect of a Police Constable.  Settled at trial for £100,000.

• Successful appeal to the Court of Appeal on behalf of a building contractor following a finding of liability by a Circuit Judge after a  two-day trial in relation to injury caused by vandal damage.

• Road Traffic Accident claim on behalf of a Claimant resulting in severe multiple injuries. Settlement recently reached at £350,000.

• Successful defence of claim on behalf of a local authority in respect of an accident suffered in an historic monument.

• Represented the Welsh Ambulance Trust in Wales’ first group litigation – “Gower Chemicals” case.


General Common Law

Property, building and general commercial disputes in the Mercantile, Chancery and Technology and Construction courts. Instructions have included:

• The first trial heard in the Cardiff Commercial Court – contractual dispute with an Italian Company in relation to the non-delivery of a fairground ride.

• 4 day trial in the Birmingham Technology and Construction Court – contractual dispute in relation to defective cladding on a factory.

• Claim in relation to theft of funds from a solicitor’s client account and attempts to trace the same into property subsequently purchased;

• Claim in respect of agents fees in relation to the sale of a villa in Tuscany;

• Claim in relation to trespass to land by means of tipping of large volumes of spoil.


Inquests/Public Law

Numerous appearances on behalf of major insurers at inquests relating to industrial deaths. Has also undertaken a number of inquests in relation to death in custody on behalf of the prison authorities.

Appeared on behalf of Chief Constable in an application before the Divisional Court for a Writ of Habeas Corpus (Littlejohn v Chief Constable of South Wales Police [2008] EWHC 301 (Admin)
