Employment

Civitas has a very strong and successful Employment group consisting of a number of highly respected practitioners in this fast-developing field. Members of the group offer a wide range of skills and expertise.
Our employment practitioners have experience in appellate and first instance work at Tribunals throughout England and Wales, and act for both employers and employees and can offer experience from the perspective of a part-time Employment Judge. Our clients range from individual employees and directors, to major private and public sector organisations. All aspects of individual and collective employment law work are undertaken. In addition, barristers in the group conduct internal disciplinary proceedings on behalf of both employees and employers, and act as advisers to appeal committees. Members also provide training packages for Human Resources professionals and run CPD accredited seminars.

'Jonathan Walters of Civitas Law is widely regarded as Wales' leading employment barrister and is also making a national name for himself. He is highly respected by interviewees for the significant work that he does for public authorities such as the police, local authorities and government agencies. He also frequently acts for private sector employers.' (Chambers UK Guide 2012)

'Anthony Vines combines acting for a significant number of union-backed claimants with a vibrant respondent practice.' (Chambers UK Guide 2012)

'The "down-to-earth and clear. Chris Howells is highly recommended for his "useful commercial advice" and for the fact that "he does not beat about the bush." He recently successfully appeared for the claimant in a five-day constructive dismissal claim.' (Chambers UK Guide 2012)

"Civitas Law's ‘dynamic’ team leader Jonathan Walters, who regularly acts for institutional clients on complex cases, (and) Christopher Howells, have created a hub of specialism in this area. Anthony Vines recently handled gender reassignment and maternity-related sex discrimination cases. Joanne Williams [is] also recommended." (Legal 500, 2011)
